April 20 - 24, 2009
This week our kindergarteners are looking at clouds! We're using a projector to look at different shapes in the clouds and reading It Looked Like Spilt Milk by Charles Shaw, The Sky Dog by Brinton Turkle, and Dreams by Peter Speir.
I'm really excited about our first grade lessons for the next couple of weeks. We're going to be doing some research on the internet about frogs. I've heard of other librarians beginning research activities with first graders, but I haven't been brave enough to try before now. Be sure and ask them what they've learned about frogs!

The Book Fair is here! Students are enjoying looking at the big variety of books and posters available. All students come to the Book Fair during their regularly scheduled library times, so each student has an opportunity to enjoy the books. If students bring money to spend, they can come during a designated time each day. The library receives a percentage of sales as profit. We then use that money to buy more books and materials for our students to use at school.
Thanks for supporting our T. L. Rodes Library!

Kindergarten and First Grade Students this week all had a Book Fair Preview! We talked about the coming Book Fair and the barbecue supper on Monday night. The kids were pretty excited to learn that Clifford will be visiting us that night! We read a few books that will be here with the Book Fair, too.
March 23 - 27, 2009
Our kindergarteners this week learned about the way the books are organized in the library. We talked about the alphabet and alphabetical order. Then we looked on the books for the information that helps us know where the books belong. We shared alphabet rescue and alphabet adventure by Audrey Wood and Black and White Rabbit's ABC by Alan Baker.
First grade students learned about graphic organizers and how to use a T-chart to record information. They heard How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World by Marjorie Priceman, then put the information about the different countries represented and the foods from each country on a chart. We're trying to use those thinking skills!
Preschool students this week had a preview of the coming Book Fair, and enjoyed reading some books that will be here then.

Week of March 16 - 20
Kindergarten Lesson - Seven Blind Mice; Tail, Toes, Eyes, Ears, Nose; What Can It Be? We discussed using other senses besides sight to determine what something is and solved visual animal puzzles and animal riddles
First Grade Lesson - various versions of Cinderella; Fanny's Dream; Bubba, the Cowboy Prince. We discussed the fact that fairy tales have many different versions, looked at a couple of them, and shared the other two stories that are based on Cinderella. We then discussed similarities and differences.
Is there any other information that you might need to see here? Please let me know!

FYI - The Spring Book Fair will be held from Friday, April 3 - Thursday, April 9. We will actually probably be ready to open on Thursday, April 2. We will have a dinner on Monday, April 6 from 5:00 - 7:00. We will be serving a barbecue sandwich, chips, and a cookie for $5. Drinks will also be for sale. The barbecue is from Blue Moon.
